Dogs with Jobs is the first in-depth documentary series to bring viewers into the world of dogs who work for a living, profiling canines that perform valuable tasks for their human masters. Each episode captures three hard-working and loyal dogs who help people in an astonishing variety of ways – as rescuers & helpmates, entertainers & TV stars, herders & heroes, therapists & athletes…and of course, lifelong friends and companions.

The program combines on-the-job footage with gripping storytelling to illustrate the drama and humor in a working dog's real life. Traveling around the world to sniff out the best tales, this fun, informative and moving documentary chronicles the vital, gritty lives of working dogs.

Meet some incredible friends and heroes. These dogs are loyal pets and hard workers. This series brings to life not only the profiles of courageous dogs, but their loyal owners. While they are often called "man's best friend," these dogs go beyond friendship as they change and save lives around the world.

Dogs With Jobs - Episode 57 - Dakota: The Search and Rescue Dog (2003) Six-year-old Pitbull Dakota is considered one of the best search and rescue dogs in North America. Because of Dakota’s strength and tenacity, she and owner Operations Lieutenant Kristine Crawford were chosen to assist in the search following the Columbia Shuttle disaster. Dakota is a gentle, loving dog who is helping to challenge conventional stereotypes about pitbulls. We follow Dakota as she searches for a missing Alzheimer’s patient.

Award winning writer and director Susan Mawhood and her film crew came out to California on September 9, 10, and 11, 2003, to film an episode about Kris and Dakota for National Geographic's Dogs With Jobs. They followed the duo around as they searched abandoned buildings, in the woods, a stripmall, and as they rappelled down into a flood channel to search for an Alzheimer's patient that wandered off from her home.

The story is about Dakota, a pitbull rescued from a future in dogfighting to become a hero in Search and Rescue. She has assisted in such high profile searches as the Laci Peterson case and the Columbia Shuttle search in Texas. Despite her good work and nationally recognized skills, Dakota has had rocks thrown at her and been poisoned because of prejudice and misconceptions about her breed. Not everyone can imagine pitbulls as loving friendly dogs, but anyone who knows 6-year old Dakota knows she wouldn't hurt a fly...and she might just save their life one day.
