Safety Around Dogs
Dogs have shared their homes with humans for more than 12,000 years. This coexistence has contributed substantially to humans' quality of life. In the United States, there are slightly more than 53 million dogs sharing the human-canine bond.

Dog bites, however,
inflict considerable physical and emotional damage on victims and also incur
immeasurable hidden costs to communities. Children make up more than 60% of
all dog bite victims. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates half of all children 12 and younger have been bitten by a dog. The chances that a victim of a fatal dog attack will be a burglar are 1 in 177; the odds that it will be a child are 7 in 10!
It's time we do something to change these odds!!

EDUCATION is the key to reducing dog bites to children!
We teach children to look both ways before crossing the street, to never accept
rides or candy from strangers, and a variety of other precautions to avoid potentially
dangerous situations. So why aren't we teaching them how to be safe around dogs?!!
With this in the mind, For Pits’ Sake goes to local schools and childrens' groups to present our Safety Around Dogs Program to teach children how to properly greet a dog, what to do when they see a loose dog, how to understand a dog's body language, and what to do in the event of an attack. For example, it is basic survival instinct that when you are afraid of something you run. However, that is the WORST thing you can do when being attacked by a dog! We teach children the steps they need to take in order to survive an attack.
Additionally, just as children need to be taught to be well-behaved around other people, they also need to be taught to be well-behaved and respectful around animals. They need to know how to touch a dog properly, how to interpret a dog's body language and to know when a dog is not to be disturbed.
The principles of positive interaction between dogs and children presented are important for teaching safety to all young children, whether or not they own dogs.
We at For Pits’ Sake have been working very hard to prevent dog bites in the community and it is our goal to get our Safety Around Dogs program into every kindergarten and elementary schools' curriculum, in an effort to keep our children safe.
In the meantime, help us at For Pits’ Sake prevent more children from being seriously injured or needlessly losing their lives by scheduling your Safety Around Dogs presentation today.
